Beginning in March throughout May is the busiest season for EIP teams. This is a critical time to review a child’s progress made in the current school year. It is also the time when the IEP team decides whether or not to recommend ESY services. The below are 4 tips for parents to think about when at the IEP table in order to help them be more confident contributing to this discussion.
4 Tips
#1 Remember Extended School Year (ESY) services is an IEP Team decision with parents being participating members of the team.
#2 Acknowledge that your child must have a need for services which may include but are not limited to demonstrated regression of learned skills during long school breaks, the emergence of a critical skill, etc.
#3 Review what services your child may need based on Present Levels of Performance (PLOP) and other relevant Data. Services may include Related Services and/or needs in the areas of Academics, Communication, and Social Skills.
#4 Discuss service delivery including flexible methods to fit the needs of your child. There is no one size fits all in Special Education which also extends to ESY.
